There was a time when Google was at the forefront of the messaging game.Google launched Talk, which was the hottest category in instant messaging in 2005. Since then, we have experienced a new breed of mobile messaging: with rich media attachments like voice memos, read receipts, and group chats.
BlackBerry Messenger drove millions to buy a BlackBerry, tiny startups like WhatsApp and established players like Facebook have brought evolution to the messaging system. Google instead was buzy churning out mobile apps like Gmail, Google Now, Google Drive, and Google+, allowing its early lead to evaporate. In April of this year itself, people sent more messages using chat apps than SMS.
Google has decided to act upon it and has come up with Hangouts, that has replaced three messaging products that Google had implemented concurrently within its services, including Talk, Google+ Messenger, and Hangouts, a video chat system present within Google+.
The Hangouts makes it incredibly easy to add up to 10 people to a chat, and more importantly, to do fun stuff with them — share your screen, watch a video together, even wear silly hats and disguises. As the importance is laid on doing fun stuff the company has created 850 new hand-drawn emoji for Hangouts’ text chat feature. It is better as compared to Skype and iChat; both tend to slow down or break down.
The time is recorded in the video chats live on, in a stream of communication. In this stream, you will find seamless integration of Gchat messages. You can be chatting via Hangout on your iPhone, and what you just said will instantly pop up in your Gmail window.
You can share photos which means the Hangouts app can work as an alternative to Flickr, Instagram or Path; plus it’s easier to find your photos if you remember who you sent them to.
However, on the downside, you can turn individual chats off the record, but you will no longer have the option to make chatting off the record the default setting for all of your chats.
