SEO Bad Habits You Should Leave Behind

SEO | April 7, 2020

There are several SEO tactics that you should be avoiding. These tactics do not work and can even get your website penalized. Here’s a list of SEO habits you should be avoided whenever you are preparing an SEO strategy.

SEO Bad Habits You Should Leave Behind

1. One page for each keyword:

Those days are behind us where we used one keyword for one page. Currently, the focus is on the overall topic for each page. Still, some businesses follow the one page one keyword strategy, often for local pages. Nowadays, you need content that your customers value. That means, there’s no place for boilerplate content.

2. Aggressive link building:

Links are public endorsements that show that a website carries valuable information. Ranking on Google is heavily based on these links. The problem occurs when the links are built in an unnatural way like through link schemes, poor link directories, purchasing links, etc. Therefore, such link building techniques should be avoided and focus more on marketing and users.

3. Adding marginal content for SEO:

You need content for SEO to work. But adding marginal content to improve your SEO should be avoided. The content you deliver should be valuable and of high-quality, when compared to your competition. Therefore, you should avoid marginal content.

4. Not fixing technical problems:

Your rankings can have a negative impact if your website’s underlying technical issues aren’t solved. Technical problems like improper redirects, slow page load times, duplicate content, etc. can all impact your search engine rankings.

5. Not optimizing images:

Optimizing images is often overlooked. Image attributes like image file name and alt tags should be filled appropriately. The filename of images should have a keyword while the alt attribute should describe the image.

6. Excessive linking between your websites:

Linking your websites frequently will not help with your search engine rankings. This is an outdated SEO technique where you link excessively between your websites to boost your backlink profile.

7. Not playing by the rules of Google:

Google has a lot of rules and regulations when it comes to SEO. As a business, you should abide by the rules laid down by Google. Many techniques let you exploit the rules and get higher ranks while flying under Google’s radar, but these do not work for long. These tactics can hurt your website and rankings, and you might end up penalized!

8. Focusing too much on keyword rankings:

Do not ignore keyword rankings, but more focus points can get you better results, like focusing on the type of traffic you are getting, what are the conversions? Is there engagement? Etc.

9. Not adapting to changes:

SEO algorithms keep on changing and failing to adapt to them will be detrimental to your SEO success. You need to stay up-to-date on best practices, algorithm changes, and webmaster guidelines. Make a habit of learning what’s new in the industry and try implementing those into your strategy.

Don’t be the bad Search Engine Optimization Company. Play with SEO in the way it is supposed to be, and you will be rewarded with results. Abide by the rules, stay updates and make sure your website is clean!
